Sommer was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1998. She is a multidisciplinary artist with a primary focus in glass. Sommer is a recent graduate of Kent State University, with a BFA in Glass, and BA in Art Education. She started working with glass in 2017 while attending Kent, and uses a variety of methods such as, torchworking, casting, fusing, and blowing in her work. Growing up she was classically trained in ballet, tap, jazz, and lyrical, which serves as inspiration for her most recent body of work. Sommer takes the iconography of ballet and transforms them into sexual objects in order to show the influence the male gaze has had on the dance form. In previous bodies of work she used installations and participatory pieces to explore the relationship between the viewer and their interactions with art.
